Hero of the Alamo from South Carolina

Colonel William Barrett Travis was born in Edgefield County in 1809 near the Red Bank Chirch. His family removed to Conecuh, Alabama in 1818. He studied the bar under Honorable James Dellett. In 1835 he removed to Texas where he took command of 4000 men and marched upon San Antonio but on Feb. 22, 1836 he led only 144 men into the Alamo.
