The founder of the settlement was Peter Ouzts who came here in 1769 from German with his father Dietereig Ouzts. He served in the Revolutionary War, participating in many battles.

Peter was 12 years old when he landed in America. His mother died aboard ship (she was buried at sea). The Ouzts' home in Germany was near the River Rhine.
